We are called to walk with our siblings in Christ from Christ Church United (CCU) in Lowell as they move from their building and nest with our congregation. They will come with their pastor Rev. Ross Allen. We will live and worship together as they sort out their next steps after the closing of their church on East Merrimack St. in Lowell. We will be in prayer and conversation to discern what wonderful things God will lead us to do together.
The story of Christ Church United is a complex and beautiful tapestry woven from thirteen different Lowell faith communities: ten Congregational, two Unitarian, and one Episcopalian. Throughout the 21st century, CCU became synonymous with its “extravagant welcome.” As an Open and Affirming congregation, it stood as a sanctuary for the LGBTQ+ community and a tireless advocate for the marginalized. From its roots in the 1820s to its modern music, arts, and social justice initiatives, CCU has served as a spiritual light in the city.
Rev. Katherine’s prayer this year has been “the harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few, therefore pray to the Lord to send out laborers into the harvest.” (Mt 9:37-38) God has answered this prayer by breathing new life into our ministry by sending us brethren to reimagine what is possible.
We welcome Christ Church United with open arms.
